Challenge:
- Acquiring new donors is costly at first, but profitable long-term, and it’s often hard to educate and persuade your executive team to make those long-term investments.
- We noticed that the cost of direct mail acquisition was at a record low.
We advocated to the President and Board for an unbudgeted $1 million to use for additional prospecting efforts
Result:
- Direct marketing revenue increased by 14% the next year, and by 22% two years after.
Poor portfolio management left millions of potential dollars unraised.
Challenge:
- An audit revealed billions in capacity on a donor file, but the team had no plan to capture it.
Our Solution:
- Right-sized gift officer portfolios from 180 to 100
- Added tiers of gift officer titles so that the most experienced staff pursued the highest capacity donors
- Rearranged geographic regions to better suit the current staff
- Encouraged portfolio managers to continuously refresh the prospects that were added to gift officer portfolios
- Created a new mid-level program for the 7,000 major gift prospects not on portfolios.
Result:
- The major gifts team raised the most in organizational history, an ~$2 million increase from the previous year.
Staff turnover makes it hard to build teams that can execute on a long-term vision.
Challenge:- On average, gift officers change jobs every 1.5 years, making it hard to build the relationships needed to ask a donor for a transformative gift.
- We created and implemented a new incentive plan to boost the retention of fundraising staff.
- This included benchmarking industry salaries, using spot bonuses for above-and-beyond contributions from individuals, and adding a team-wide bonus pool to encourage collaboration.
- The Development department had the highest employee satisfaction in the enterprise.
